January 14th, 2012

The term “Online game” refers to a game that is played over several different forms of computer network, especially bound to the Internet people are using today. It aims at helping people to relax and entertain themselves in the virtual world. With the rapid development of science and technology(especially with the rising popularity of Flash and Java), online game has formed its impeccable network as well as perfect system, making it more and more popular among all walks of people, and it even becomes an important part of people’s life.

Online game often emerges in diverse forms or genres; it can vary from FPS to MMO, from action-adventure to role-playing. In general, online game is divided into two major types: browser-based games and Client online games. The first type is my favorite as it has simple operating program: I can play it once I open the browser. It does not bother me to download or install anything. There are many games belonging to this type, including Crystal Saga, war-themed RTS, Nap War and simulation with Skyrama as its representative.

The second type Client online game, however, is opposite to browser game, and you cannot play it unless you have downloaded and installed the client. It generally consists of the following types: MMORPG (with World of Warcraft), MMO (Fallen Earth), FPS (War Rock) and ARPG (ARGO) as well.

To sum up, online game has become an indispensable part of our life to some extent. After undergoing gradual development and improvement, it has established itself very well in the world of entertainment. And game developers will never stop their efforts to make profit out of it. What we should do now is just to enjoy the current Online games and then wait for their updates.

DotMMO Announces free games section: 500 New MMO Added

May 28th, 2011

DotMMO today announced that they have launched a new section for mmo games. With MMO Game Site’s free games section, you could find the most popular and newest free games to play online. Also, free game developers such as Zynga, Perfect Word, Bigpoint will contantly develop new free games for players, and accordingly we will update our list as new free games come out.

Play free online games in HTML Web 3.0 age. You are never out of date. Free games refer to games that one can play without having to buy the Time Card or to pay for the playing time. Such games are embraced warmly by players when they made their debut. Although they are not yet the mainstream in the game industry, free games cast influence over both enterprises and players. Are free games really free? If so, how can initiators of free games make profit and hold footing in the increasingly competitive game market? If so, how would more and more companies running on game business race to follow suits to launch free games of their own? It would be naïve for anyone to think that they just want to entertain players. Corporations exist primarily for profit.

Actually, the answer presents itself evidently from the business model of CSP in the game industry: Come, Stay and Pay. Players finally will pay, not for the time card but for value-added service. Among various services of value, the most important is the sale of virtual in-game items, such as medical suppliers, weapons, special equipment and ornaments etc. It is almost unavoidable to buy these items if players want to upgrade and remain competitive in the game. In a sense, superiority in such games relies heavily on money instead of playing skills. In effect, such a business model is coined in the industry as IB, namely Item Billing.

Therefore, it seems like such a snare that players come to these games by their “free” promise, stay a while to enjoy, and then find themselves in a dilemma: pay for it or leave it. Although free games are not completely free, they have succeeded in one way or another in grabbing certain share of game market. And it is an open question whether the “free” model will remain its momentum or return to the traditional paid style. One can only wait and see.

MMORPG Gaming Spot Tells the history of online games

April 15th, 2011

Dot MMO just sent us a letter saying they are launching its new MMO blog, with clean wordpress theme. Below is a brief account of game history explained by Dot MMO

Online game, short for online games, generally refers to the video game played by more than one player interactively and entertainingly through internet. it includes many types, such as strategy game, action game, sports game, fighting game, music game, racing game, web game and role-playing game, etc. but there are fewer online pc games as well.

History:

The history of online games can be traced back to the mainframe computer in 1970s. online games required quite large amounts of computing and network transmission capacity, so the earlier online games, which was generally presented by pure text message, laid emphasis on interaction among players rather than acoustic and phonic effects. as the hardware and software technology advanced, online games server, represented typically by mud, made its gradual appearance in small workstation and received applauds from student groups. Meanwhile, the traditional pc game began to make use of lan to take up the small-scale online form (from 2 to 8 persons), but it was mainly constrained to shooting or rts game. playing such games required exchanges of striking amounts of synchronous message; therefore, lan suitable for high speed did not allow for a larger population scale. in the mid-1990s, the online games industry began to adopt technology similar to mud to develop online games.

Contrast to shooting or rts game dependent on high-speed lan, this framework drew upon the optimal communication protocol plus complex forecasting algorithm to realize the required synchronous messages instead. Same with multi-user dungeon, this type of games need mediating servers to calculate and it must be able to accommodate ten thousand people odd to play synchronously. such type of games is later generalized as massively multiplayer online game (mmog) to differentiate itself from earlier lan games. mmog can also be called massively multiplayer online role playing game (mmorpg) due to its large amounts of players, large scale as well as its general role playing type.

Online Games: Future Creator or Destroyer?

February 27th, 2011

Online gaming is a technology rather than a genre; a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of gameplay. With the development of online games, will we one day be finally plunged into a pure virtual world in the computer without self-knowledge as people in the movie The Metrix do? This sort of prophecy is a little bit scary, but it has been long discussed that what on earth can online game bring into our future. Whether or not will our human being end in living in an unreal internet world?

Lots of people think that online games are detrimental to our life. This newly born technology will misguide the youth who are still incompetent to have a sound judgment. Since the appearance of on line game, to some degree, is to satisfy the players’ appetite for the experience which can not be tasted in the real world, killing and sensual scenes abound in online games as selling points. Doubtless this kind of online games will misleadingly infill the children’s mind with subconscious desires for violence, one night stand relationship and crime. What’s worse, online games have occupied too much time which could otherwise be spent in a more worthwhile way. They usually have many different levels and tasks, thus it becomes a continuous process or even a great project to play online games. Players have to group with other people and to fight round the clock to upgrade. However, the modern industrial life is characteristic of fast speed. We have to make use of every second to its fullest. So if players fritter away so much time in playing online games, their studies, jobs and social responsibilities will be totally ruined.

However, there are still another bunch of people who believe that online games are future-oriented. This technology not only stimulates the development and prosper of some relevant economic industries, but also becomes an indispensable part of our daily life. These games give rise to many imaginative conceptions which serve as rolling stone to make further and broader our technological development.

Then if you are a parent, will you allow your children to play online games? As far as I’m concerned, let time be the best judge to give us the answer.
